Margie's Candies

Location: 1813 W Montrose
Cost: < $5 per person

I first discovered Margie's when I'd finished a gigantic dinner at Glenn's Diner across the street. My dad had been going there for years and said that since it was such an institution, I had to make room. This time, since we were just around the block at Spacca Napoli, we planned ahead to leave a little space for some baller ice cream under the train tracks.

Logistics
Margie's has this real old school look. There's a big, L-shaped counter where you can order while being thoroughly distracted by the various candy products they make. At this location there's a nice patio and a bunch of more crowded seating options within the restaurant. We grabbed a spot on the patio and finished our meal right before it started to rain. The wait is another issue if you come at the wrong time, but we slid right in. The location on Western can make one huge line on a summer night.

Everyone is very friendly, and once you place your order, things come out pretty quickly. The major advantage to sitting inside is that they serve everything in these clam shaped ceramic dishes. The cost is average to inexpensive for most ice cream places. Our banana split that easily served the three of us might have cost around $6.

The Food
My primary goal when I go to Margie's is to make sure I get some of the hot fudge on whatever I order. Everything else is just a secondary aim. This time, we decided to share a 3 Scoop Banana Split. Our flavors were cappuccino, moose tracks, and chocolate chip. My favorite was the moose track with the huge chunks of peanut butter cups. The split was well constructed. The fudge was rich, thick, and plentiful. Mostly though, the ice cream was very smooth.

Overall
Margie's has been around for over 80 years and is a Chicago institution. It's one of my favorite spots in town for ice cream, and the hot fudge can't be beat. If you're looking for a nostalgic experience then this is your place. I think it clearly edges out both Bobtail and Windy City Sweets so I'm giving them 4.5 out of 5 Pearls.
